Create an OpenAI key
From no account to a key ready to paste, in a few minutes: a key with only the right the service needs, on an account whose spending is bounded.
-
Create an API account
Open platform.openai.com and create an account, or sign in with your ChatGPT account. The API platform is billed on its own: a ChatGPT subscription gives it no credit.
-
Add prepaid credit
In “Settings”, then “Billing” (platform.openai.com/settings/organization/billing), add a payment method and a first credit. Leave automatic recharge off: spending can then never exceed the credit you paid in.
-
Create a restricted key
On the keys page (platform.openai.com/api-keys), click “Create new secret key”. Choose “Restricted” and grant a single permission, write:
Chat completions. It is enough for the transcription and the smoothing. Leave everything else on “None”, then copy the key: OpenAI will not show it again. -
Cap the spending
In “Settings”, then “Limits” of the key's project, set a monthly budget. Even if the key leaked, the spending would stay bounded.
Your key is ready: paste it into the app, on the OpenAI key page. It is verified there before it is kept.
Revoke or delete
Revoking the key at OpenAI, from the keys page, stops it for everyone at once: no request goes through with it any more, from the service or anywhere else.
Deleting it from the app erases the only copy the service keeps: the service stops using it, but it stays valid at OpenAI. A transcription in progress pauses, and can resume with a new key.
If it leaked, revoke it: that is the gesture that stops everything.
