Raw text

Okay, so, um, let's move on to the second part, the time value of money. So the, the basic idea is that a euro today is worth more than a euro in a year. Why? Because, uh, if you have it today, you can invest it, you can put it in the bank and earn interest on it. So if the rate is five percent, a hundred euros today becomes a hundred and five in a year. And if you flip it around, um, a hundred and five euros in a year is worth a hundred today. That's discounting, that's what we call discounting, and it gives you the, uh, the present value. So the present value is the future amount divided by one plus the rate, to the power of the number of years. Right. And there are, there are really three things that drive it: the amount, the rate, and the time. We'll take them one by one.

The time value of money

The basic idea is that a euro today is worth more than a euro in a year. Why? Because if you have it today, you can invest it: you can put it in the bank and earn interest on it. If the rate is five percent, a hundred euros today becomes a hundred and five in a year.

If you flip it around, a hundred and five euros in a year is worth a hundred today. That's what we call discounting, and it gives you the present value: the future amount divided by one plus the rate, to the power of the number of years.

Three things really drive it:

  • the amount
  • the rate
  • the time

We'll take them one by one.

What you send, what you get back

Any audio or video file, as it was recorded, up to 5 hours and 5 GB.

The language spoken is detected and kept: a recording in French gives a text in French.

You get a document to copy or download, with the raw text beside it.

An email tells you when it is ready, so you can close the page in the meantime.

What it costs

The service charges you nothing. The processing runs on your own OpenAI key, and you pay OpenAI directly for what it spends.

An hour of recording costs about $0.28, transcription and smoothing included: an estimate, at OpenAI's current rates. The estimate for each file is shown before you start it, and nothing is spent without your say.

A ChatGPT subscription does not cover it: the key comes from OpenAI's API platform, which has its own prepaid credit. The key guide takes you there in a few minutes.

What is kept

Your key is verified on entry, stored encrypted, never shown again and used only for your transcriptions. You can delete it from the app at any time, and revoke it at OpenAI.

Your recording is sent to OpenAI under your own account, then deleted from the service once processing ends. Only the text is kept.

Your texts stay in your account until you delete them, with no automatic deletion, and are never shared or used for anything else.

The details are on the privacy page.

Who runs it

What Did You Say is run independently by one person, who uses it for their own recordings. A question, a problem: [email protected].
